The Asian Games is the world’s second-largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
The Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, officially concluded on Sunday, October 4, with the closing ceremony at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium. The ceremony marked the end of the 2026 Games, spanning nearly two weeks, during which Indian athletes made their mark across various sports.
India finished fourth in the medal tally with 85 medals, including 21 golds, 27 silvers, and 37 bronzes. China topped the standings with 341 medals, including 169 golds, followed by Japan (269 medals) and South Korea (150 medals).
The country secured double-gold finishes in cricket, hockey, and kabaddi. Several individual athletes also stood out, including trap shooter Neeru Dhanda, who won three medals, including two golds and a silver. Dhanda was chosen as India’s flagbearer for the closing ceremony.

The 21st Asian Games will be held in Doha, Qatar. Representatives of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) were present in Aichi-Nagoya to receive the OCA flag from Japan, formally completing the handover.
The Doha 2030 Games will be only the second edition of the continental tournament to be hosted in Qatar and the second to be held on the Arabian Peninsula. Doha had previously hosted the 2006 edition and will become only the fourth city to host the tournament twice.
With the 2034 edition set to be hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the 2030 Games will be the first of two back-to-back editions hosted in the Middle East.
However, the OCA Executive Board approved a proposal in February 2026 to shift the Games cycle to the year before the Summer Olympics, meaning the Doha Games would move from 2030 to 2031.

Meanwhile, Riyadh’s 2034 edition would move to 2035. However, the OCA’s public calendar still lists Doha 2030, and Doha organisers have said they are prepared to host the Games in either year as discussions continue.
Khalifa International Stadium is expected to be one of the tournament’s main venues. Much of the infrastructure to be used for the Games was built for the 2006 Games and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
