India reached the semi-finals after the Afghanistan match was washed out
The Asian Games 2026 cricket competition has now reached the knockout stage, with teams fighting for a place in the medal matches. The men’s cricket tournament is being played in Japan, with several teams looking to finish the tournament with a medal.
The Men in Blue entered the Asian Games as the defending champions after winning the gold medal in the 2023 edition in Hangzhou. Shreyas Iyer is leading the Indian team this time, with the side hoping to repeat the same from the last edition.
India were one of the teams to get direct entry into the quarter-finals because of their higher ICC T20I ranking. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka also received direct entry into the last eight.
However, India did not get the chance to play their quarter-final against Afghanistan. Continuous rain and a wet outfield forced the match to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. India then progressed to the semi-finals because they were the higher-seeded team.

India’s semi-final opponent will be decided by the quarter-final between Sri Lanka and Nepal. The two teams will meet on September 29, with the winner moving into the last four to face India.
Sri Lanka entered the quarter-finals directly as one of the seeded teams. Nepal, meanwhile, reached the knockout stage after finishing among the top teams in their group.
This means the Men in Blue will either face Sri Lanka or Nepal in the second semi-final of the Asian Games 2026 men’s cricket competition.
India’s quarter-final washout means the team will have more time to prepare for the semi-final. Shreyas Iyer and co. can now focus on the next match without having to play a quarter-final.
The semi-final is scheduled to be played on October 1 at the Aichi Prefectural Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan.
India will be looking to make the most of their chance and move one step closer to another gold medal. However, they will first have to wait for the result of Sri Lanka vs Nepal to know their exact opponent.
