India are set to face Afghanistan in the quarterfinals of the Asian Games 2026 on Monday, September 28. The game will be played at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin.
India secured a direct spot in the last eight; however, Afghanistan played two group-stage games against hosts Japan and Nepal. They won against Japan by 48 runs but suffered a disappointing 5-wicket defeat to Nepal.
India also played a one-off T20I in the Suzuki Cup against Japan last week, where Shreyas Iyer and co. secured a close 2-run triumph. However, India and Afghanistan will meet for the fourth time this month. The two-time T20I World Cup champions hosted Afghanistan for a three-match series, which the former won 3-0.
While the Men in Blue decided to field a full-strength squad for the Asian games 2026, Afghanistan retained only two players who toured India earlier this month: Darwish Rasooli (the captain) and Abdollah Ahmadzai.
In case the game gets washed out, the Men in Blue will move forward to the semi-final clash, courtesy of their higher seeding. The Afghan Atalans have never won a T20I game against the last edition’s gold medalists.
