MMA is making its debut at the Asian Games 2026.
MMA has been included for the first time in the Asian Games currently underway in Aichi-Nagoya, and the biggest talking point is the floor because there are no fences or cages, which people are used to seeing. This is listed under contact sports next to ju-jitsu and kurash.
The rules governing MMA stem from the body overseeing the event. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) opted not to align with an existing global MMA organisation, instead backing a new continental governing body, the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association (AMMA).
Its rulebook is therefore being applied in Nagoya rather than that of any private promotion. As a multi-sport event organiser, the OCA has sought a standardised, judged format, drawing on the competition structures used in other Olympic-track combat sports.
The professional model has a very different origin. The UFC launched in 1993 inside a fenced octagon, with almost no rules. The phrase “mixed martial arts” was first documented that year in a television critic’s review of UFC 1.
As the sport grew in popularity, promoters faced increasing pressure to introduce additional safety regulations and secure greater mainstream acceptance. By the early 2000s, MMA was a global business whose pay-per-view revenue rivalled boxing and professional wrestling.
Japan, this year’s host, is part of that story. Shooto (1985), Pancrase (1993) and Pride (1997) were all founded there, inspired by the 1976 Ali vs Inoki exhibition bout.

What changes does the mat bring?

Judo, wrestling, taekwondo and karate are all contested on mats, so an MMA mat fits the Olympic family the sport is joining. A flat, open surface is easier for referees and judges to manage. It also removes fence tactics, such as pinning an opponent against the wall.
The core skills stay the same. MMA is a full-contact sport built on striking and grappling, so fighters still cover long range, close range, the clinch and the ground. Only the setting changes.
Any multi-sport Games also need the basics — weight classes, clear scoring, referees, medical checks and anti-doping. These are standard expectations for an event of this scale, rather than a formally published list of specific rules for the Nagoya competition.
India have already felt both sides of the debut. Suchika Tariyal became India’s first MMA medallist at the Asian Games.
Varun Sanyal, who made his amateur debut in July 2022 and won the Indian National Amateur Championships the following year, was ruled out after dizziness during his weight cut. Moreover, the Games will run until October 4.
