Asian Youth Athletic Championships: India wraps up with 24 medals

India won six gold, 11 silver and seven bronze medals at the event.

India has ended the Asian Youth Athletic Championships winning 24 medals with six golds, 11 silver, and seven bronze medals. This season athletes from China and Japan did not take part who are heavyweights at the Asian level.

Mubssina Mohammed from Lakshadweep as expected has been the player to watch at the Asian Youth Athletic Championships. She won two silver medals in both her events Long Jump and Heptathlon. The 16-year-old scored 4730 points in seven events and just missed the gold medal by seven points.

In the Long Jump, Mubssina cleared a distance of 5.91m also creating a Personal Best which was previously at 5.90m. Lakshadweep does not have a proper 400m track and with Mubsinna winning medals at the global meet it will ultimately motivate the athletes from the island.

Praful Patel the administrator quoted, "Mubasseen Mohammad" daughter of Lakshadweep for an astonishing achievement of winning the silver medal in the long jump, an athlete event of the Youth Games held in Kuwait. Many congratulations champion, you make the country proud.

Divyashree was the second athlete from India to take part in the Long Jump event finishing 6th with a jump of 5.64m.

800m Gold

Asha Kiran Barla the 15-year-old from Jharkhand won the gold medal in the 800m with a timing of 2:06.79 minutes. Last month the youngster broke the girl’s 800m meet record at the National Youth Athletics Championships. She has been progressing well on the world stage finishing semi-finalist at the U20 World Athletic Championships.

Medley Relay Gold

Ruthika Saravanan was part of the gold medal-winning girl's medley. Ruthika had a good time at the National Youth Athletic Championships but couldn't qualify for the 100m after a false start in the semi-finals at the National event but went on to gold at Asian Youth Championships..

Amit Choudhary won gold in 1500m with a time of 4:04.59s on an opening day claiming India’s first gold medal at the Asian Youth Athletics.

Kuldeep Yadav claimed the third spot with a jump of 4.80m in the men’s section and Ganghas claimed the second spot in the women’s section of the Pole Vault event. India has not produced medals in the pole vault on the global stage but slowly the trend has started to change with National Record being broken at the senior level both in the men's and women’s sections.

Deepika won the silver medal in the girl's Javelin throw with a distance of 50.15m. This was not her best throw perhaps having breached the 51m mark twice before at the Khelo India Youth Games and the National Youth Championships. In the girl's section, the weight of the Javelin is 500g.
