Sumit Antil sets new javelin throw World Record in Indian Open National Para Athletics C'ships 2023

Tokyo Paralympics champion Sumit Antil broke his own world record in the F64 (javelin throw category) at the fifth Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships in Bengaluru. He bettered his own record by spearing the Javelin to 70.17m (previous WR - 68.62m) and in the process also qualified for the World Para Athletic Championships 2023.

In 2021, Sumit Antil won gold medal in the men’s javelin F64/44 final with a throw of 68.55m at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The first major success on the International stage came in 2019 at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Italy.

He broke the world record in the F64 category en route to winning the silver medal in the combined event. He then won the silver medal at the World Para Athletics Championships, Dubai in 2019 and in the process broke his own world record in the F64 category.

After a successful outing at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, he competed in the Indian Open National Para Athletics Championships and rewrote the world record for the fourth time in a year with a throw of 68.62m, breaking his own mark of 68.55 meters.

Sumit Antil qualified for the Asian Games in 2018 but could only finish in the fifth spot. Since then he has shown a lot of improvements and his next aim would be to breach the 80m mark. Countrymate, Pranav Desai won the gold medal in the 100m sprint (T64 category).

The 5th Indian Open Para Athletics International Championships is being held from May 05-07 at the Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in Bengaluru. The tournament will serve as a selection for the World Para Athletics Championships 2023 and the Asian Games 2022, scheduled to be held later this year.
