The world champion will be looking to retain title in his final event this year.

In the realm of sports, few moments are as electrifying and memorable as the triumphant journey of an athlete who soars to greatness against all odds. One such remarkable moment etched in history is Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal win in the Asian Games 2018. Amidst a backdrop of intense competition and high expectations, Neeraj’s stellar performance in the javelin throw event not only secured a gold medal but also set a new national record.

As we stand on the cusp of the Asian Games 2023 where he is poised to defend his title, it’s an opportune time to revisit and celebrate the spectacular achievement that catapulted Neeraj Chopra to international acclaim. Join us on this journey down memory lane as we relive the inspiring story of Neeraj’s triumph in Jakarta, Indonesia.

In the 18th edition of the Asian Games in Indonesia, Neeraj Chopra secured the coveted gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event. The reigning Olympic and world champion exhibited unwavering confidence right from the start by launching the javelin to an impressive distance of 83.46 meters.

However, it was in his third attempt that he truly stole the spotlight as he achieved an astounding 88.06 meters where he not only claimed the gold but also shattered the national record in the process.

Despite facing the disappointment of officials declining his second throw, the resilient athlete at the age of 20 remained undeterred and delivered throws of 83.25 meters and 86.26 meters in his fourth and fifth attempts respectively.

This remarkable achievement marked India’s second gold medal in athletics and the 8th overall at the Games. It also cemented his legacy as only the second Indian, following in the footsteps of the legendary Milkha Singh in 1958, to achieve the remarkable feat of clinching both the Commonwealth Games (CWG) and Asian Games gold medals within the same calendar year.

In this debut appearance at the Asian Games, he also came tantalizingly close to the Games record of 89.15m that was set by Zhao Qinggang in the Asian Games 2014. This victory served as a stepping stone to the next level of his journey as he continued to excel further by achieving hid string of remarkable achievements that has consistently raised the flag of pride for India on the global sports stage.
