Reigning World and Olympic champion, Neeraj Chopra, will defend his men’s javelin throw title in the Diamond League 2023 Final in Eugene, USA. This event marks the culmination of the 2023 Diamond League season, featuring top athletes from various disciplines who earned their spots through 13 legs.
Neeraj Chopra, who also holds national record in men’s javelin at 89.94m, is the sole Indian representative in the final. Notably, he’s also the only Indian athlete to have secured a Diamond League title in any athletics discipline, having achieved this feat in 2022.
En route his journey to Eugene, Chopra, who recently became the world champion in Budapest, claimed victories in the Doha and Lausanne legs but settled for second place in Zurich, with Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch taking the top spot – Vadlejch will be a formidable contender in Eugene. Other challengers include two-time world champion Anderson Peters from Grenada, Finland’s Oliver Helander, and American Olympian Curtis Thompson.
It’s worth noting that while men’s long jumper Murali Sreeshankar and 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable had also qualified for the finals, they chose to skip the Eugene meet in favor of preparing for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, starting September 23.
This Diamond League 2023 Final will be a crucial event for Neeraj Chopra, as it serves as one of his last competitive outings this season before the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Fans in India can catch the live streaming and telecast of his javelin throw event in the early hours of Sunday, eagerly hoping for a successful defense of his title and another remarkable achievement in his already illustrious career.
