For the very first time, three Indian athletes have earned their spots in the finals.
With a fifth-place finish in the Xiamen Diamond League, India's Avinash Sable joined compatriots Neeraj Chopra and Murali Sreeshankar in qualifying for the Diamond League Finals 2023, which will take place in Hayward Field in Eugene on September 16-17.
Neeraj Chopra
Newly crowned World Champion Neeraj Chopra, who is also the reigning Diamond League champion, will look to successfully defend his title in Eugene. He qualified for the finals after accumulating 23 points with wins in Doha and Lausanne and a second-place finish in Zuirch. Chopra only finished behind Jakub Vadlejch (29 points) and Julian Weber (25 points).
Notably, his third-place position stemmed from missing the Monaco leg due to injury concerns, unlike Jakub and Weber who participated in all events.
Chopra's journey to the finals was fueled by his remarkable wins in the Diamond League meetings in Doha and Lausanne. These victories preceded his historic gold medal triumph at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where he achieved an astonishing throw of 88.17 meters. He finished as runners up in Zurich and will now aim to defend his Diamond League and Asian Games title in the next few weeks.
Murali Sreeshankar
India's Murali Sreeshankar made his mark in the men's long jump event at Zurich, securing a commendable fifth place with a best jump of 7.99 meters. Notably, this marked Sreeshankar's third appearance in the prestigious Diamond League series for the year. His earlier performances included a remarkable third-place finish in Paris and a solid fifth-place showing in Lausanne.
The Zurich Diamond League 2023 event was a game-changer for Sreeshankar as it added four crucial qualifying points to his tally, confirming his participation in the highly anticipated Diamond League Finals 2023. Sreeshankar joined an exclusive club, becoming then only the second Indian athlete, following in the footsteps of Neeraj Chopra, to earn a coveted spot in the prestigious Diamond League Final.
Avinash Sable
Avinash Sable of India secured his first-ever Diamond League Finals berth with a fifth-place finish in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the 2023 Xiamen Diamond League event in China. This milestone achievement occurred in the Xiamen Diamond League 2023.
Sable's performance earned him a coveted spot in the prestigious final, marking a significant accomplishment in his career. With a commendable performance across four races, Sable notched up a total of 11 valuable Diamond League points. This impressive tally secured a sixth-place finish in the overall Diamond League series, making him only third Indian to qualify the coveted qualification for the upcoming final.
