Two Indian athletes will be taking part in the competition.
The Diamond League 2023 will now shift to Switzerland for the Zurich Diamond League 2023, also known as Weltklasse Zürich, and it will run from August 30 to September 1. World-class athletes from all over the world will take part in this prestigious event to earn qualifying points to qualify for the Diamond League Finals, which will be held in Eugene on September 16 and 17.
The event that everyone will keep an eye on will be the women’s pole vault. It will be a rematch between two superstars — USA’s Katie Moon and Australia’s Nina Kennedy who shared the gold medal in the recently concluded World Athletics Championships after they both cleared 4.90m and opted not to take part in a jump-off. They will again lock horns against each other in the Zurich Diamond League 2023.
Scotland’s Josh Kerr is also one of the athletes to look out far. His sensational victory over Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the men’s 1500m was one of the biggest surprises of the World Athletics Championships. He will be back again to compete against Jakob. It will be interesting to see who will have the last laugh this time.
Indians participating in Zurich Diamond League 2023
There will be two Indians who will be participating in the Zurich Diamond League 2023. Reigning World and Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra and Commonwealth Games 2022 Silver Medalist Murali Sreeshankar.
After winning the World Championships recently, Neeraj will aim for consistency and would want to breach the 90m mark at the Zurich Diamond League. Having won the previous two meets (Doha and Laussane), he will also eye a third Diamond League title in Zurich. The main competitor for Neeraj will be 2022 world champion Anderson Peters, 2023 World Championships bronze medalist and Tokyo silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch and Julian Weber respectively.
Murali Sreeshankar, on the other hand, is coming from a disastrous World Championships where he jumped a mediocre distance of 7.74m and finished 22nd overall in the qualification round of men’s long jump. He will look to improve his timings and replicate the third-place finish in Paris Diamond League.
He would also like to get some valuable points which will help him in qualifying for the Diamond League finals. He is currently in the third position with 10 points and a good finish in Zurich will ensure him a spot in the finals.
