Bains finished second in two different events.
Indian athlete Harmilan Bains displayed a remarkable performance at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023, earning herself a noteworthy silver medal in the women's 1500m race. Building upon this achievement, she continued her impressive streak by securing another commendable second place finish in the women's 800m race on Wednesday.
Although the 25-year-old athlete was in fourth place in the final moments of the race, she shifted the momentum and surpassed the Chinese athletes, ultimately finishing in second place behind Sri Lanka's Tharushi Dissanayaka with a time of 2:03.75.
Notably, Harmilan's parents have also represented India at international competitions and achieved great success for the country. Her mother, Madhuri Saxena won a silver medal at the 2002 Asian Games, while her father, Amandeep Bains secured a silver medal in the 1500m event at the South Asian Games.
After the conclusion of the event, Harmilan Bains expressed her happiness about winning the silver medal, but at the same time regretted not clinching the gold. “Although I won a silver, I missed out on winning the gold. Even I ran faster in my last 800m in the 1500m race than I ran in the 800m race today,” she stated.
She displayed resolute determination to secure a more favorable conclusion in subsequent endeavours. “The journey doesn’t end here. I will surely look for gold next time,” she added.
When asked about being so composed and determined during the event, she stated, “I give 100% to anything that I do. That’s what has helped me to get two back-to-back medals over here.”
She also revealed how she will celebrate back home. “I will just call my mother to the airport and put the medals on her neck. At last it was my parents’ dream to see me over here. So, all these are for them only,” she stated with a hint of emotion.
