Season started with national cross country championships
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has planned 23 major competitions in 2024, keeping in mind the global events, especially the Paris Olympic Games in August.
The qualification and ranking periods for all individual events, except the marathon, for Paris 2024 will end on June 30, 2024. The marathon will qualify runners until April 30, 2024. This means that the competitions in the first half of the year will be crucial for Indian athletes who want to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics.
Indian competitors will have a better chance of qualifying for the Olympics in the familiar domestic venues, even though there will be several international athletics meetings this year.
The domestic Indian athletics season for 2024 will start with the National Cross Country Championships in Gaya, Bihar on January 15 and end with the district competitions in December.
March will be a busy month, with the India Open 400m, jump and throw competitions, as well as the inaugural National Open Relay Carnival in Chandigarh. The action will continue in May, with Bengaluru hosting the first Indian Grand Prix of the year. The athletics scene will then move to Chennai on May 30 for the Indian Grand Prix 2, followed by the third and fourth India Grand Prix 2024 meets in Bengaluru and Patiala in June and July, respectively.
The National Interstate Senior Athletics Championships will take place in Panchkula, Haryana in June, while the National Open Athletics Championships will be held in Bengaluru from August 30 to September 2. These two events, which will mark their 63rd editions this year, are scheduled before and after the Paris Olympics. Thus, the Interstate athletics championships will serve as a vital final selection event for athletes aiming for a spot in the Paris Olympic Games.
