The 2024 Paris Olympics will commence on July 26.
The grass season has started, and tennis stars have commenced their preparation for the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. However, this year is different because, just after the conclusion of the grass-court Grand Slam, the Paris Olympics 2024 will get underway.
The tennis events of the Olympics will take place at the prestigious Stade Roland Garros from July 27 to August 3. Several tennis stars have decided to miss the grass season for the Olympics, while a few have decided to take a rest and miss the sporting mega fest.
Notably, the Olympic tennis event doesn’t affect the rankings of a player. However, as per 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, the Olympic gold medal is nothing less than a fifth Major. Thus, without further ado, let’s take a look at the complete list of tennis players who will miss the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Tennis stars who have withdrawn from Paris Olympics 2024
Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu, who underwent three surgeries last season, missed the 2024 French Open to prepare for the grass season. With Olympic tennis being played at Stade Roland Garros, the Brit was expected to miss the Paris Games. She has also confirmed that she won’t play in the Paris Games as that might cause her more problems.
Aryna Sabalenka
Aryna Sabalenka’s 2024 French Open ended abruptly in the quarterfinals after she lost against Mirra Andreeva in three sets. During the match, it seemed like she was struggling with pain. The Belarusian was also spotted taking medicine and demanding for a doctor during the match. Sabalenka also denied sitting in the post-match press conference as she was not feeling well.
Later, the Belarusian revealed that she has been suffering from health issues for the last few months and she has decided to skip the Olympics to avoid any further problems. She also complained about the tight scheduling of WTA tournaments.
Ons Jabeur
Ons Jabeur was Tunisia’s biggest medal hope at the 2024 Paris Olympics; however, the 28-year-old has announced that she won’t play in the games. Much like Aryna Sabalenka, Jabeur’s main concern is also the tight schedule of WTA. The 28-year-old also affirmed that she wants to avoid the possibility of suffering a knee injury by not changing the surface from grass to clay.
Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton announced during the Indian Wells Masters in March that he did not want to take part in the 2024 tennis tournament of the Olympic Games. He stated that the ATP schedule is already tight, and he’s not keen to participate in the Paris Games.
Andrey Rublev
Andrey Rublev will also miss the 2024 Paris Olympics due to recurrent tonsillitis. He opted out of the tournament to treat the condition during the Olympic break. Rublev’s mother, Marina Marenko, has confirmed the news.
Karen Khachanov and Liudmila Samsonova
Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Karen Khachanov will also miss the 2024 Paris Games. The head coach of the Russian national tennis team, Shamil Tarpishchev, has announced that Khachanov will miss the Olympics. He also announced that Andrey Rublev and Liudmila Samsonova would not play at the Olympics.
However, as per several reports, the actual reason behind the Russian players missing the Olympics is claimed to be geopolitical. Pavel Kotov and Aslan Karatsev will reportedly represent Russia in the singles category at the Paris Olympic Games.
Elise Mertens
Belgian tennis star Elise Mertens will miss the 2024 Paris Games. As per ITF, the 28-year-old is missing the 2024 Olympics due to insufficient participation in the Billie Jean King Cup. However, she’s yet to speak on the topic.
Storm Hunter
Elise Mertens’s doubles partner, Storm Hunter, is also set to miss the 2024 Paris Games due to injury issues. The 29-year-old ruptured her Achilles tendon in April, before the Billie Jean King Cup. Due to the devastating injury, she will miss the 2024 Paris Olympics as she’s still recovering.
