Neeraj Chopra joined likes of Rory Mcilroy, Roger Federer to have plaques at Ice Palace

Neeraj Chopra, India’s first Olympic gold medalist in athletics, has been honored by Switzerland Tourism with a plaque at the famous Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch, known as the ‘Top of Europe’. The 26-year-old javelin thrower, who also won the World Championships in 2023, was welcomed by the tourist attraction to unveil the commemorative plaque on Thursday.

Chopra donated one of his javelins to the Ice Palace, and it has been placed alongside the plaque. He joins stars such as tennis legend Roger Federer and golfer Rory Mcilroy, who also have plaques at the Ice Palace.

Expressing his gratitude at the unveiling of the plaque, the 2020 Gold Medalist said, “I am humbled by the love and appreciation I have received in this country. To have a plaque installed here in this stunning Ice Palace was beyond my wildest dreams, yet here I am. I feel on top of the world, as I stand at the Top of Europe.” Chopra enthralled the attendees by showcasing his javelin-throwing skills.

Chopra is one of the most decorated athletes in India’s history. He won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 87.58 meters, becoming the first Indian track and field athlete to win an Olympic gold medal.

He also became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Championships in 2023, with a throw of 88.17 meters. He has also won gold medals at the Asian Games in 2018, the Commonwealth Games in 2018, the Asian Championships in 2017, and the World Junior Championships in 2016. He is the only Indian to have won medals at all these major events.
