India will have its hands full in Athletics Calendar this year and none bigger than Tokyo World Athletics Championships where Neeraj Chopra will defend his javelin throw world title.
After earning India’s first gold medal at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, 2021 Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will lead India’s bid at the premier event of this season.
Three major events carve up the vacant space right in the middle of the calendar. The season opens with the World Athletics Relays in China (May 10-11), the next major event being the Asian Championships in South Korea (May 27-31). The World Championships in Tokyo complete the international scheduling.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) launches the Indian Open World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour on August 10 in Bhubaneswar, marking India’s entry into the wearing ivory as far as World Athletics’ global one-day meet circuit is concerned.
Domestic action begins with the 59th National Cross-Country Championships in Uttar Pradesh on January 12. In April, the Indian Open meets and Senior National Federation Cup takes place with significance as qualifiers for the Asian Championships, with Olympic qualification opportunities also.
Indian race walkers will not participate in the Asian Race Walking Championships to be held in Nomi, Japan in March, as priority will be given to the April national competition instead of training for the Tokyo World Championships.
