Sawan Barwal ended Indiaโ€™s 44-year marathon medal wait with silver

India added three medals to its athletics tally on Day 3 of the Asian Games 2026, with Sawan Barwal and Tajinderpal Singh Toor winning silver medals, while Prachi Choudhary secured bronze.

Barwal ended Indiaโ€™s 44-year wait for an Asian Games marathon medal, while Toor missed out on a hat-trick of gold medals in the menโ€™s shot put. Prachi produced a personal best to finish third in the womenโ€™s 400m final.

Sawan Barwal won silver in the menโ€™s marathon with a personal best of 2:11:37. Japanโ€™s Yamashita won gold in 2:10:49, while Chinaโ€™s Feng took bronze in 2:12:13.

Barwalโ€™s medal ended Indiaโ€™s 44-year wait for a marathon medal at the Asian Games. India had last won one in 1982, when Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan won bronze. Barwal also improved his own national record in Nagoya.

Kartik Karkera was the other Indian in the race and finished 17th.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor misses a hat trick of golds and wins silver

Tajinderpal Singh Toor won silver in the menโ€™s shot put with a best throw of 20.64m.

Toor was aiming for a third consecutive Asian Games gold after winning the title in 2018 and 2022. He won the 2018 edition with a Games Record of 20.75m, which remains the Asian Games record, before defending his title with 20.36m in 2022.

Iranโ€™s Tayebise won gold with a new Games Record of 20.81m, while Karanveer Singh finished 10th with 18.40m.

Prachi Choudhary wins bronze in womenโ€™s 400m

Prachi Choudhary won bronze in the womenโ€™s 400m final with a personal best of 53.21 seconds. Bahrainโ€™s Salwa won gold in a games record of 49.20 seconds, while Kiran Pahal finished fifth in 53.41 seconds.

Tejaswin Shankar leads decathlon standings after day 1

Tejaswin Shankar leads the menโ€™s decathlon with 4,338 points after five events. He clocked 10.67 seconds in the 100m, recorded 7.53m in the long jump, threw 13.16m in the shot put, cleared 2.18m in the high jump and ran 48.59 seconds in the 400m.

Thowfeeq Noushad is eighth with 3,676 points after recording 11.02 seconds, 7.37m, 10.76m, 1.88m and 51.80 seconds respectively. Both will compete in the remaining five events on Sunday.

Animesh Kujur qualifies for menโ€™s 200m final

Animesh Kujur qualified for the menโ€™s 200m final after finishing second in his semifinal in 20.81 seconds. He had earlier won his heat in 21.10 seconds.

Harita Bhadra and Unnathi Bolland qualify for womenโ€™s 200m final

Harita Bhadra and Unnathi Bolland both progressed to the womenโ€™s 200m final. Harita clocked 23.31 seconds, while Unnathi ran a personal best of 23.33 seconds.

Nandhini Kongan qualifies for womenโ€™s 100m hurdles final

Nandhini Kongan advanced to the womenโ€™s 100m hurdles final with 13.48 seconds. Jyothi Yarraji, one of Indiaโ€™s medal hopes, did not start her heat and was listed as DNS.

Gulveer Singh and Yoonus Shah qualify for menโ€™s 1500m final

Gulveer Singh qualified for the menโ€™s 1500m final after finishing third in Heat 2 in 3:45.79. Yoonus Shah also progressed after finishing third in Heat 1 in 3:45.77.

Vishal Thennarasu finishes fifth in menโ€™s 400m final

Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi finished fifth in the menโ€™s 400m final with 45.48 seconds.

Vishal had topped his qualifying round on Friday but could not convert that into a podium finish.

Parul Chaudhary finishes fourth in womenโ€™s 1500m final

Parul Chaudhary finished fourth in the womenโ€™s 1500m final with a personal best of 4:09.46, while Pooja finished sixth in 4:16.78.

Karthik Unnikrishnan finishes sixth as Praveen Chithravel suffers injury

Karthik Unnikrishnan finished sixth in the menโ€™s triple jump final with 16.02m.

Praveen Chithravel, one of Indiaโ€™s medal hopes, could not register a valid mark after suffering an injury while attempting his opening jump.

India takes athletics tally to eight medals

India now have eight athletics medals at the Asian Games 2026, comprising four silver and four bronze medals.

The silver medals have come from Sawan Barwal, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Gulveer Singh and the mixed 4x400m relay team, while Seema, Manpreet Kaur, Baranica Elangovan and Prachi Choudhary have won bronze.

What to expect from India on Day 4 of Athletics?

India will have several medal opportunities on Sunday, with Manju Rani and Priyanka Goswami competing in the womenโ€™s marathon race walk. Tejaswin Shankar and Thoufeeq Noushad will continue their decathlon campaign, while Murali Sreeshankar and David Solomon Patturaj will feature in the menโ€™s long jump qualification. Shaili Singh and Ancy Sojan Edappilly will compete in the womenโ€™s long jump final.

Animesh Kujur will line up in the menโ€™s 200m final, while Harita Bhadra and Unnathi Bolland will compete in the womenโ€™s 200m final. Sarvesh Kushare and Aadarsh Shankar will feature in the menโ€™s high jump final, while Nandhini Kongan will contest the womenโ€™s 100m hurdles final. Krishan Kumar and Mohammed Afsal will compete in the menโ€™s 800m qualification, with Ankita and Parul Chaudhary in the womenโ€™s 3000m steeplechase final. India will also begin its womenโ€™s 4x100m relay campaign in the qualification round.
