Athletics: A list of national records in track events

Several athletes from the country have set impressive milestones.
Breaking and setting a new national record is a dream for every budding athlete. It is a moment of pride for each athlete to set a benchmark in their respective sports. In addition, most athletes who set national records also go on to represent India in Athletics at multiple global multi-sport events.
Athletics is divided into track and field events. Some of the events consisting in the track category are 100m race, 200m race, hurdles, steeplechase, etc. These are extremely physically demanding and see stiff competition in each category.
Therefore, setting a national record is a major achievement for any athlete. Staying on this course, here is a look at all the national records held by Indians in their respective events:
Men
100m
Amiya Kumar Mallick holds the record in the 100m sprint with a time of 10.26. He set the record on 28 April 2016 at the National Federation Cup in New Delhi.
200m
Amlan Borgohain holds the national record in the 200m race with a time of 20.52. The sprinter set the timing at the Federation Cup on 6 April 2022.
400m
Muhammad Anas also has the best national timing in the 400m sprint. He leads with a mark of 45.21 set on 13 July 2019.
800m
Jinson Johnson holds the national record in the 800m discipline. The sprinter set a mark of 1:45.65 on 27 June 2018 at the National Inter-State Athletics Championship which remains unbroken.
1500m
Jinson Johnson also has the record national timing in the 1500m event. His timing of 3:35.24 set in Berlin, Germany is a national record.
3000m
Heading into endurance events, the national record in the 3000m event is held by Surendra Singh. He set the record timing of 7:50.31 back in 2008.
5000m
Bahadur Prasad holds the record timing in the 5000m event with a mark of 13:29.70. His record still stands after having been set in 1992.
10000m
Surendra Singh set a national record in the 10km race back in 2008. The athlete recorded a time of 28:02.89 at the Spanish Olympic Trials.
12 hour
The national record for a 12-hour run in Athletics is held by Dhananjay Sharma who covered a distance of 133.54 km in the stipulated time.
24 hour
Binay Kumar is the national record holder in the 24 hours run with a distance of 222.24 km.
110m hurdles
Siddhanth Thingalaya holds the national record for the 110m hurdles event. He set a time of 13.48 in June 2017 that still holds to the date.
400m hurdles
The national record in the 400m hurdles is held by Ayyasamy Dharun who set a mark of 48.80 at the Federation Cup in 2019.
2000m steeplechase
Atul Gamit holds the national record in the 2000m steeplechase event with a timing of 5:49.23 set in November 2019.
3000m steeplechase
The national record in the 3000m steeplechase event is held by Avinash Sable with the timing of 8:16.21. The Olympian is a force in the endurance event and impressed during the Summer Olympics in Japan.
5000m walk
Juned Khan is the national record holder in the 5000m walk event with a timing of 20:20.04.
10000m walk
Akhsdeep Singh holds the national record with a timing of 40:37.78 in the 10k walk discipline in Athletics.
20000m walk
Gurmeet Singh set the national record of 1:20:22.52 in the 20k walk event back in 2012 at the All-India Railway Championships.
4 × 100m relay
The national record for the fastest time in the 4 x 100m relay is held by Rahamatulla Molla, Suresh Sathya, Shameer Mon and A. Qureshi. They set a timing of 38.89 at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.
4 × 400m relay
The national record for the 4 x 400m relay was recently set by the team consisting of Muhammed Anas, Noah Nirmal Tom, Arokia Rajiv and Amoj Jacob. They impressed at the Tokyo Olympics by setting the record time of 3:00.25 in the event.
Women
100m
Dutee Chand holds the national record in the 100m race with a time of 11.17 set in June 2021 at the Indian Grand Prix held in Patiala, Punjab.
200m
Saraswati Saha recorded a time of 22.82 to set a national record in the 200m race back in 2002 at the National Circuit Meet.
400m
Hima Das is the national record holder in the 400m event in Athletics with a time of 50.79 set at the 2018 Asian Games.
800m
Tintu Luka holds the national record timing in the 800m event. The athlete set the record with a timing of 1:59.17. She did so at the Continental Cup in 2010.
1500m
Harmilan Kaur Bains recently broke the national record in 1500m and set a new timing of 4:05.39. She did it at the National Open Championships in 2021.
3000m
Suriya Loganathan holds the record timing of 9:04.50 in the 3000m event.
5000m
Preeja Sreedharan’s timing of 15:15.89 at the 2010 Commonwealth Games stands as the national record in the discipline.
10000m
Preeja Sreedharan also holds the national record in the 10k event. She has a record timing of 31:50.47 to her name.
12 hours
Ashwini G holds the national record for covering 111.78 km in the 12-hour race, set back on 2 February 2020.
24 hours
Apoorva Chaudhary holds the national record by completing 176.8 km in the 24-hour race.
100m hurdles
Anuradha Biswal holds the national record with a timing of 13.38. She set the mark on 26 August 2002.
400m hurdles
Legendary sprinter P.T. Usha still holds the national record in 400m hurdles with a time of 55.42. She set the record way back in 1984 during the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
2000m steeplechase
The national record in the 2000m steeplechase event is held by G. Maheshwari with a time of 6:42.18.
3000m steeplechase
Lalita Babar holds the record timing in the 3000m steeplechase event with a mark of 9:19.76. She set the time at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
5000m walk
The national record in the 5000m walk is held by Khushbir Kaur with the timing of 22:05.75.
10000m walk
Khushbir Kaur also holds the national record timing of 44:33.5 in the 10k walk. She set the timing on 27 December 2017.
20000m walk
Bhawna Jat set the record timing of 1:36:16.87 in the 20k walk event. She did so on 22 August 2019 at the All-India Railway Athletics Championships.
4 × 100m relay
The record in the 4 x 100m relay is held by the team of Dutee Chand, Hima Das, S Dhanalakshmi, and Archana Suseendran. They set the timing of 43.37 at the Indian Grand Prix on 21 June 2021.
4 × 400m relay
Rajwinder Kaur, K. M. Beenamol, Chitra K. Soman and Manjit Kaur hold the national record in the 4 x 400m relay event. The team set a mark of 3:26.89 at the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece which still stands to date.
