Athletics: Indian national record holders in each track and field event

Shivnath Singh’s record in men’s marathon has been untouched in the past 46 years.
All athletes, wearing the blue jersey and representing India, aim a benchmark which they forever strive to achieve. This motivates in delivering good performances, while representing the country at prestigious international competitions.
While the world record should be the eventual aim, what better than the national record to gauge the calibre of an athlete, in a country as populous as ours. India has seen an increase in the field of athletics from men and men over the years.
Speaking about athletics, track events demand great speed like the 100m and 200m sprint, while others demand endurance such as the 20km racewalk. Field events requires immense strength like the discus throw, while some demand flexibility in events like high jump.
Sporting disciplines in athletics like the decathlon for men and heptathlon for women, need a mixture of all these qualities. Indian athletics has now the athletes grabbing worldwide attention with their performances.
In athletics, few national records have remained intact for long. In some other events, we have seen various athletes competing with each other, thus repeatedly improving the national record.
There has also been some brilliant sportsmen and sportswomen who have broken their own records a number of times in athletics.
Here is the list of distinguished track and field athletes, who have the prestige of holding the national record currently, in their respective events.
Indian National Record holders in each athletics track and field event
Men
100m
Manikanta Hoblidhar holds the national record in the 100m sprint. He achieved it with a timing of 10.23 secs on October 11, 2023 at the National Open Athletics Championships in Bengaluru.
200m
Amlan Borgohain holds the national record in the 200m sprint. He achieved it on April 7, 2022 in the final of the Federation Cup, with a timing of 20.52 secs.
400m
Muhammed Anas Yahiya holds the national record in the 400m run. He clocked a timing of 45.21 secs on July 13, 2019 at the Kladno Athletics meet in the Czech Republic.
800m
Jinson Johnson holds the national record in the 800m event. He achieved it on June 27, 2018 at the National Inter-State Athletic Championship, with a timing of 1:45.65.
1500m
Jinson Johnson also holds the national record in the 1500m discipline. The record stands at 3:35.24, set at the ISTAF Berlin meet on September 1, 2019.
5000m
Gulveer Singh holds the national record in men’s 5000m with a timing of 13:11.82s that he set at the World Athletics Continental Tour bronze level meet at Niigata, Japan on September 28, 2024.
10,000m
Gulveer Singh also holds the national record in the 10,000m run. He achieved it on March 16, 2024 at the Ten 2024 Athletics Meet, with a timing of 27:41.81.
3000m Steeplechase
Avinash Sable has betterd his own national record multiple times in the 3000m Steeplechase event. He clocked his current personal best of 8:09.91 at the Paris Diamond League on July 7, 2024.
110m Hurdles
Tejas Shirse holds the 110m Hurdles national record with a timing of 13.41 secs achieved on May 23, 2024 at the Motonet GP Jyvaskyla athletics meet in Finland.
400m Hurdles
Ayyasamy Dharun holds the 400m Hurdles national record. He achieved it on March 16, 2019 at the Federation Cup 2019, with a timing of 48.80 secs.
20km Racewalk
Akshdeep Singh holds the national record in the 20km Racewalk. He achieved it at the National Open Race Walking Championships, with a timing of 1:19:38, on January 30, 2024.
50km Racewalk
Sandeep Kumar set the national record in the 50km Racewalk, on February 18, 2017, at the National Race Walking Championships. He clocked a timing of 3:55:59.
Marathon
The national record set in the men’s marathon has stood the test of time, with Shivnath Singh having a clocked a timing of 2:12:00, at Jalandhar in 1978. It is the longest standing record in Indian athletics so far.
4 x 100m relay
The quartet of Rahamatulla Molla, Suresh Sathya, Shameer Mon and A. Qureshi hold the national record in the event, with a timing of 38.89s achieved at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, New Delhi.
4 x 400m relay
The quartet of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh put on a mind-boggling show on August 26, 2023 at the Qualifiers of the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, setting the national record with a timing of 2:59.05.
High Jump
Tejaswin Shankar holds the national record in high jump. He completed a record jump of 2.29m on April 27, 2018 at the Texas Tech Corky.
Pole Vault
Subramani Siva broke his own national record in pole vault, on October 3, 2022 at the National Games, clearing 5.31m.
Long Jump
Jeswin Aldrin is the national record holder in long jump. He scaled a whopping distance of 8.42m on March 2, 2023 at the Indian Open Throws Competition in Bellary, Karnataka.
Triple Jump
Praveen Chithravel holds the national record in triple jump. He holds the record by virtue of a 17.37m leap on May 6, 2023 at the Prueba de confrontacion in Cuba.
Javelin Throw
Who else can it be, but India’s golden boy, Neeraj Chopra with the national record in javelin throw. He threw a masive distance of 89.94m on June 30, 2022 at the Stockholm Diamond League.
Shot Put
Tajinder Pal Singh holds the national record in shot put. He achieved it on June 19 2023, with a 21.77m throw at the Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneshwar.
Discus Throw
Vikas Gowda is the national record holder in discus throw. The record stands at 66.28m, which Gowda achieved at the Old Style Discus Challenge in 2012.
Hammer Throw
Kamalpreet Singh improved upon his own national record in hammer throw on May 21, 2015, with a throw of 72.86m at the Tucson Elite Classic.
Decathlon
Tejaswin Shankar set the decathlon national record at the 2022 Asian Games, securing 7666 points.
Women
100m
Dutee Chand holds the national record in the 100m sprint. She achieved it on June 21, 2021 in the Indian Grand Prix IV, with a timing of 11.17 secs.
200m
Saraswati Saha holds the national record in the 200m sprint. She achieved it with a timing of 22.82 secs at the National Circuit Meet 2002.
400m
Hima Das holds the national record in the 400m discipline. The record stands at 50.79 secs, set at the Jakarta Asian Games on August 26, 2018.
800m
Tintu Luka holds the national record in the 800m run. She clocked a timing of 1:59.17 on September 4, 2010 at the Continental Cup.
1500m
K.M. Deeksha holds the national record in the 1500m event. She achieved it at the 2024 Track Fest on May 12, with a timing of 4:04.78.
5000m
Parul Chaudhary is the national record holder in the 5000m run. She clocked a timing of 15:10.35 on May 6, 2023 at the Sound Running On Track Fest.
10000m
Preeja Sreedharan holds the national record in the 10000m run. She achieved it at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, with a timing of 31:50.47.
3000m Steeplechase
Parul Chaudhary also holds the national record in the 3000m Steeplechase event. She achieved this on August 28, 2023 in the final of the Budapest World Athletics Championships, clocking 9:15.31.
100m Hurdles
Jyothi Yarraji holds the 100m Hurdles national record, with a timing of 12.78 secs. She achieved this timing at the FISU World University Games 2023, before matching it at the 2024 Motonet GP Jyvaskyla athletics meet in Finland.

400m Hurdles
P.T. Usha and Vithya Ramraj hold the 400m Hurdles national record. P.T. Usha set the record, with a timing of 55.4 secs at the 1984 Summer Olympics, which was matched by Ramraj at the 2023 Asian Games.
20km Racewalk
Priyanka Goswami holds the national record in the 20km Racewalk. She achieved it at the National Open Race Walking Championships, with a timing of 1:28:45, on February 14 2021.
Marathon
Jaisha Orchatteri holds the national record in the women’s marathon. She clocked a timing of 2:34:43 to set the record at the World Athletics Championships on August 30, 2015.
4 x 100m relay
The quartet of Dutee Chand, Hima Das, S. Dhanalakshmi and Archana Suseendran hold the national record in the event, with a timing of 43.37 secs achieved at the Indian Grand Prix IV on June 21, 2021.
4 x 400m relay
The record stands with the quartet of Rajwinder Kaur, K. M. Beenamol, Chitra K. Soman, Manjit Kaur. They achieved a record timing of 3:26.89 at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
High Jump
Sahana Kumari holds the national record in high jump. She acheived a record jump of 1.92m at the National Inter-State Championships 2012.
Pole Vault
Akin to the men’s event, Rosy Meena Paulraj broke her own national record in pole vault, at the National Open Athletics Championships on October 15, 2022 while clearing 4.21m.
Long Jump
One of the greatest athletes to represent India in track and field, Anju Bobby George is the national record holder in long jump. She scaled a distance of 6.83m at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Triple Jump
Mayookha Johny holds the national record in triple jump. She holds the record by virtue of a 14.11m leap on July 9, 2011 at the Asian Athletics Championships.
Javelin Throw
Annu Rani threw a distance of 63.82m on May 8, 2022 while breaking her own national record at the Indian Open Javelin Throw competition.
Shot Put
Abha Khatua holds the national record in shot put. She achieved it on May 13 2024 with an 18.41m throw at the Federation Cup.
Discus Throw
Kamalpreet Kaur is the national record holder in discus throw. The record stands at 66.59m, which she achieved on June 21, 2021 at the Indian Grand Prix IV.
Hammer Throw
Sarita Singh set the national record in hammer throw on June 1, 2017 with a throw of 65.25m at the Federation Cup.
Heptathlon
J.J. Shobha set the heptathlon national record at the New Delhi Meet 2004, securing 6211 points.
Mixed Team
4 x 400m relay
The quartet of Muhammad Ajmal, Jyothika Sri, Muhammad Anas Yahiya and Pahal Kiran broke the existing national record on June 30, 2024. They clocked a timing of 3:12.87 at the National inter-state championships.
