Indian steeplechase runner Avinash Sable confirms ACL and meniscus tear, begins rehabilitation following surgery in Mumbai.

Indian middle-distance runner Avinash Sable has confirmed that he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus injury in his right knee while participating in the Monaco leg of the Diamond League

The 29-year-old announced via Instagram that he has undergone surgery at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai under the supervision of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his medical team.

Sable described the development as a significant setback in his season but expressed his intent to recover fully. “It’s a tough setback, but I’m determined to do the hard work and come back stronger,” he wrote in his social media update.

He also thanked those who have supported him during this time, including the Athletics Federation of India, the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), the Sports Authority of India, Inspire Institute of Sport, Nike, and JSW Sports.

The injury comes at a crucial period in the athletics calendar. Sable has been India’s most reliable performer at the international level over the past few years.

He is the current national record holder in the men’s 3000m steeplechase and has represented India at the Tokyo Olympics, World Athletics Championships, and the Diamond League tour. His 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medal in Birmingham had also been a breakthrough, ending Kenya’s long dominance in the event.

After the announcement, other athletes and sports professionals, including representatives of India’s athletics fraternity, posted messages of support on the post. Several wished him a smooth and complete recovery.

As of now, no specific timeline has been shared regarding Sable’s expected return to competition. Rehabilitation from ACL and meniscus surgery usually takes six to nine months, depending on the nature of the injury and the athlete’s response to treatment. His availability for future competitions will depend on his fitness and medical examinations.

Sable’s injury will be keenly observed by Indian athletics officials and fans in general, considering that he is among the country’s top distance runners. Additional information about his training status and competitive intentions will be made available in the months ahead.
