Damneet Singh fell 0.9m short of equalling the National Record in men’s hammer throw.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor clinched the gold medal in men’s shot put final on the opening day of the 5th Indian Open Throws Competition 2026 at the NIS Patiala in Punjab on Saturday, March 7. The star Indian player registered a best throw of 20.51m, which came of his second attempt to win the gold medal.

Karanveer Singh from Punjab threw 19.36m to win the silver medal, while Haryana’s Sanyam registered a best throw of 18.28m to take home the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Damneet Singh bagged the gold medal in the men’s hammer throw event, with a best throw of 70.64m, coming off his fifth attempt.

He missed out on breaking the national record of 70.73m set by Neeraj Kumar in a decade ago. Ashish Jakhar (68.09m) and Devang (63.27m) bagged the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Sanjana Choudhary from the host team won the gold medal in women’s javelin throw final. Meanwhile, Tanya Chaudhary (61.09m) from Uttar Pradesh clinched the top honors in women’s hammer throw.

With a best throw of 16.44m, Yogita clinched the gold medal in women’s shot put, while Seema bagged the gold medal in women’s discus throw, registering a best throw of 57.78m.

Two finals in the men’s category will take place on the second day of the competition. Kirpal Singh will be in action in the men’s discus throw final, while Kishore Kumar Jena, Shivam Lokhare, and Uttam Patil will compete in the men’s javelin throw final.
