India at World Athletics Championships 2025 Day 5 Highlights: Neeraj Chopra, Sachin Yadav qualify for javelin final; Animesh Kujur finishes 9th in 200m heats

After Sarvesh Kushare’s stunning performance yesterday, India and Indian fans will have their hopes high as Neeraj Chopra returns to action today at the World Athletics Championships 2025.

Chopra, the defending champion in men’s javelin throw, will begin his title defense with the qualification round, which will decide the finalists for tomorrow’s medal round.

A total of 37 javelin throwers will be in action in the qualification round of men’s javelin throw, with athletes who manage to breach the qualifying mark of 84.50 booking their spots in the final round. Should less than 12 athletes fail to hit the qualifying mark, the 12 best throwers will enter the final.

Chopra, who has a personal best and season best throw of 90.23m, should enter the final easily and warm-up to defend his title in the medal round on Thursday.

Apart from Chopra, three more Indian javelin throwers will be in action in the qualifying round. Sachin Yadav (85.16 PB), Rohit Yadav (83.65m PB), Yash Vir Singh (82.57m PB) will also aim to reach the medal round.

While Sachin’s season best and PB of 85.16m, makes him one of the candidates to qualify for the final, Rohit and Yash Vir will have to pull out new career-best throws to breach the qualifying mark.

For the 27-year-old Chopra, the main challengers will be Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, Diamond League champion Julian Weber, Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio da Silva and Anderson Peters.

Meanwhile, javelin throw is not the only event that will have Indian representation on Wednesday.

Animesh Kujur, the Indian national record holder will also be in action in men’s 200m heats. The 22-year-old will be in action in heat 3. Animesh will have a difficult task in hand as only the top three from each heat and the next six fastest athletes will advance to the semi-finals.

Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker will also represent India in men’s triple jump qualification on Wednesday. Aboobacker, who has a personal best of 17.19m is in group A while Chithravel with a PB of 17.37m is in Group B.

The qualifying mark in men’s triple jump is 17.10m or the best 12 athletes qualify for the final. While the qualifying mark will be a distance too far for the Indian duo, they will aim to be among the top 12 performers in qualification to reach the final.
