India at World Athletics Championships 2025 Day 6 Highlights: Neeraj Chopra disappoints; Sachin Yadav, Pooja smash PB

All eyes will be on Neeraj Chopra as he gets ready to defend his title in men’s javelin throw at the World Athletics Championships 2025. Chopra, a two-time medallist at the Worlds and reigning champion, showed a glimpse of what to expect with his only throw in qualification to book his spot in the final.

With the qualification mark set at 84.50m, Chopra soared his javelin to 84.85m nonchalantly in his very first attempt to secure his place in the final.

Joining Chopra in the medal round will be compatriot Sachin Yadav, who advanced by finishing inside the top 12 in qualification. Sachin’s best throw of 83.67m came in his second attempt. He finishes 10th overall while Chopra eventually ended at sixth place.

Neeraj’s biggest competitors in the final will be Julian Weber, Arshad Nadeem and Anderson Peters.

Nadeem is the defending Olympic champion, which he achieved with an Olympic record throw of 92.97m in Paris, where Neeraj took silver with 89.45m.

However, the Pakistani javelin thrower looked shaky in qualification and only secured direct entry with an 85.28m throw in his final attempt after two sub-80m throws.

Meanwhile, Weber may yet to win an Olympic and Worlds title but has shown he’s made for the big moment this season.

In Doha Diamond League earlier this season, Weber spoiled Neeraj’s celebratory night with a 91.06m throw. This was after Neeraj had broken the 90m barrier for the first time in his career with an 90.23m attempt.

Similarly at the Diamond League Final last month, Weber struck again with back-to-back 90m throws, winning gold at 91.51m while Neeraj settled for 85.01m with silver yet again.

Then there’s Anderson Peters. The two-time world champion from Grenada has spent most of this year recovering from injury, but in Tokyo, he returned like he never left.

After a warm-up throw of 84.44m, he unleashed 89.53m in his second attempt which was also the best of the qualification round.

Apart from Neeraj and Sachin, Pooja Olla will also be in action today. She will compete in the 800m heats with an aim to reach the semi-finals and then the final round.
