Doha marks the first competition for Neeraj Chopra after Hangzhou Asian Games.
Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist, and Kishore Jena, the Asian Games silver medalist, are set to represent India in the men’s javelin throw event at the Doha Diamond League 2024 on May 10. This event marks the start of their Olympic year campaign.
Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena will face a highly competitive field featuring former world champion Anderson Peters, as well as reigning Olympic silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch and former silver medalist Julius Yego.
Notably absent from the 10-man lineup is Germany’s Johannes Vetter, who has been dealing with injuries over the last three years. Additionally, Max Dehning, who made headlines earlier this year as the youngest javelin thrower to hit the 90m milestone, will also not be competing in Doha.
Neeraj Chopra, last year’s winner at Doha Diamond League, is gearing up for his first competitive appearance since securing gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.
As an Olympic gold medalist and runner-up in the Diamond League final, he is determined to break the 90m barrier, a goal he has been vocal about as he prepares for the Paris Olympics. Neeraj’s preparation during the off-season has been thorough, with training stints in Turkey and South Africa preceding the start of the season.

Meanwhile, Kishore Jena aims to build on his success from 2023 and position himself as a strong contender in the Olympic year. The 28-year-old Indian achieved a personal best throw of 87.54m, which secured him a silver medal in the Asian Games last year. He also had a 5th-place finish in the World Athletics Championships.
Although India’s Shivpal Singh and DP Manu have both achieved throws exceeding 80m this season, they will not be participating in Doha.
