Neeraj Chopra returns to home soil.
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will make his much-anticipated return to competition on home soil as the top Indian athletes gather in Bhubaneswar for the Federation Cup 2024 on Sunday.
The javelin throw ace, fresh off a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League meet, headlines a star-studded field at the Kalinga Stadium. It will be Chopra’s first domestic event in India since his historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Joining the 26-year-old will be fellow javelin thrower Kishore Jena, the Asian Games silver medalist whose personal best of 87.54m booked his Paris 2024 Olympic spot last year. All eyes will also be on DP Manu, who at 84.35m is just shy of the 85.50m Olympic qualifying mark.
The men’s long jump promises an intriguing battle, with national record holder Jeswin Aldrin (8.42m) still searching for his first 8.27m+ jump of the Olympic qualification period to secure his Paris berth. The Olympic hopeful faces a quality field including two-time Asian Games triple jump champion Praveen Chithravel, who set a national record of 17.37m last year.
On the women’s side, the long jump could see a new national record as Nayana James and Shaili Singh duel to eclipse Anju Bobby George’s 6.83m mark and achieve the 6.86m Olympic standard.
Two-time Asian Games shot put champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor, who holds the national record at 21.77m, needs to reach 21.50m to book his Paris ticket. The 29-year-old returns to the venue where he threw 21.77m last June.
The 400m races will feature the Indian 4x400m relay quartets that secured Olympic quotas at last week’s World Relays. Men’s entries include Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal, and Asian Games champion Rajesh Ramesh, while Jyothi Sri Dandi, M.R. Poovamma, Subha Venkatesan and Vithya Ramraj lead the women’s field.
With the Olympic qualification window closing June 30, this meet represents one of the final opportunities for Indian athletes to achieve entry standards for Paris 2024.
