Tajinderpal Singh Toor failed to cross the Olympic qualification mark.

Asian Games champion Tajinderpal Singh Toor retained his gold medal at the 2024 Federation Senior National Athletics Championship on May 14 in Bhuvaneshwar, Odisha, with a resounding throw of 20.38m.

Only two out of Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s six attempts were legal in the competition. In his first attempt, he recorded a throw of 20.14m. However, his gold-medal winning throw came on the third attempt, where he leapt a total distance of 20.38m.

After the win, the two-time Asian Games gold medalist said, “It has been a tough period for me. I was facing several problems, including a few personal ones. So I’m satisfied with this performance today. I need to get better to improve on this.”

He later added, “Today’s performance was good as I did my season best despite a back problem and my wife not well.’

Tajinderpal Singh Toor secured the gold medal by a huge margin. Madhya Pradesh’s Samardeep Singh Gill finished second with a throw of 18.93m. Moreover, Aryan Tyagi from Uttar Pradesh won the bronze medal with 18.07m as his best throw.

Toor recorded his season-best figures in Odisha, as he was earlier suffering from back issues. In addition to that, the 29-year-old was also going through personal problems.

However, the Indian shot put star failed to achieve the Olympic qualifying mark of 21.50m. Tajinderpal Singh Toor managed to achieve the Asian record with a throw of 21.77m in a national meet last year at the same venue.

Apart from Toor, Jeswin Aldrin also secured a gold medal in the long jump but eventually failed to secure an Olympic quota. Aldrin, who won the silver medal in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships last year, recorded his best jump at 7.99m in his sixth and final attempt. Arya S. secured the silver medal with a leap of 7.83m while Muhammed Anees Yahiya finished a close third with 7.81m.
