Gulveer Singh betters his own national record in men's 3000m at Budapest meet

This was Gulveer Singh’s first event on the European track.

India’s Gulveer Singh shattered the men’s 3000m national record, clocking a time of 7:34.49 seconds at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Budapest on Tuesday, August 12. He bettered his own national record of 7:38.26 seconds on his maiden appearance on the European tracks.

The 2025 edition of the Gyulai Istvan Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold level event, took place at the Nemzeti Atlétikai Központ in Budapest, Hungary.

Gulveer Singh’s new national record is also the fifth fastest time by an Asian athlete in the men’s 3000m event. He finished fifth in the event in Budapest, behind Uruguay’s Valentin Soca, who completed the race in 7:34.28 seconds.

Kenya’s Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang won the men’s 3000m race at Gyulai Istvan Memorial with a time of 7:33.23 seconds. Meanwhile, Eduardo Herrera from Mexico and Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo finished second and third with a time of 7:33.58 seconds and 7:33.93 seconds, respectively.

A total of 17 players took the field on Tuesday in the 3000m event at Gyulai Istvan Memorial. Two athletes each from Kenya, Australia, and Hungary competed in the race, while one player each from Mexico, Uganda, Uruguay, India, Burundi, Ireland, Switzerland, Guatemala, France, Canada, and the Czech Republic were also in action. 16 athletes completed the race, while the Czech Republic’s Filip Sasínek did not finish.
