Indian Open U23 Athletics Championships 2024: Animesh Kujur completes sprint double, named best male athlete

Five meet records were shattered on the final day of the Indian Open U23 Athletics Championships 2024.
Animesh Kujur and Devyaniba Zala were named the best male and female athlete of the 4th Indian Open U23 Athletics Championships 2024 respectively. Kujur, who had clinched gold in men’s 100m, also took the men’s 200m gold on the final day.
The third and final day of the competition witnessed some promising results. In the morning session, the heats of 400m hurdles, 800m, 200m and heptathlon took place. The only final in the morning session was the men’s hammer throw in which Mayank Yadav of Uttar Pradesh won the title with a best throw of 60.87m.
The afternoon session saw Uttar Pradesh’s Anand Singh win gold in men’s javelin throw with a best attempt of 74.75m. Moreover, in the women’s long jump, Moumita Mondal — who also won the women’s 100m hurdles title — bagged the gold medal with a best jump of 6.27m.
On the other hand, Jomon Joy of Kerala created a new meet record with a best effort of 2.17m to take gold in the men’s high jump.

Meanwhile, the most exciting event of the day was the men’s 400m which needed a photo finish to determine the winner. Karna Bag of West Bengal pipped Murad Sirman by three milliseconds to win the gold medal. Both the youngsters will look to breach the 50s barrier soon. Karana registered 50.904s while Murad registered 50.907s.
Deekshita of Karnataka won the women’s 400m hurdles title with a timing of 1:00.40s. The women’s 200m saw Kusum Thakur beating Sudeshna Hanmant with a timing of 24.19s.
The most awaited event of the day was, however, the men’s 200m where the favourite Animesh Kujur shattered the meet record by clocking 20.65s to win the gold medal. Nalubothu of Andhra Pradesh won the silver medal while Abhay Singh finished fourth and missed on a medal.
Laxmipriya Kisan won the gold medal in women’s 800m with a timing of 2:08.70. Moreover, in the men’s category Shakeel won the gold with a timing of 1:51.90. The women’s discus throw saw Sanya Yadav breaking the meet record with a best throw of 50.59m while Grima also bettered the previous meet record with a best throw of 49.07m.
Meet recorded were also rewritten in the men’s long jump and heptathlon events. Anurag set a new meet record with an effort of 7.87m in men’s long jump while Kerala’s Anamika registered 5160 points in heptathlon. In the same event, Haryana’s Pooja also bettered the previous meet record with total points of 5066.
The event concluded with the 5000m race where Puneet Yadav won the gold in men’s category with a timing of 14:29.15 while Sonam won the women’s title with a timing of 16:58.54.

- Men’s 200m: Gold – Animesh Kujur (20.65s), Silver – Nalubothu (21.29s), Bronze – Tamil Arasu – (21.52s)
- Women’s Discuss Throw: Gold – Sanya Yadav (50.59m), Silver – Grima (49.07m), Neetu Kumari (48.26m)
- Men’s Long Jump: Gold – Anurag (7.87m), Silver – Sriram (7.70m), Bronze – Sanmat Darshan (7.68m)
- Heptathlon: Gold – Anamika (5160), Silver – Pooja (5066), Bronze – Deepika (4975)
