Femke Bol breaks her own meeting record in the women’s 400m hurdles at Lausanne Diamond League 2024.
Femke Bol of the Netherlands, somewhat dismayed at finishing third in the Olympic 400m hurdles final, got back into winning mode at Lausanne Diamond League 2024 after overhauling early leader Rushell Clayton halfway down the finishing straight and winning in a meeting record of 52.25, with the Jamaican taking second place in 53.32, one position ahead of compatriot Janieve Russell (54.48).
Bol increased her lead in the last two hurdles as Clayton could not catch up with her. After the final hurdle, Clayton was further behind Bol.
Bol broke her own meeting record which was 52.76 seconds. After her win at Lausanne, the Dutch runner is in first place in the Diamond League Finals with 24 points. Andrenette Knight who finished fourth at Lausanne with timing of 54.93 secs is second in overstandings with 23 points.
The 24-year-old could further expand her lead in the upcoming races. Bol and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone are the first two athletes this season to run a sub 51 race in the women’s 400m hurdles event. Bol has not been able to overcome the dominance of Sydney but has been rising up the ranks.
Diribe Welteji sets new meeting record in women’s 3000m at Lausanne Diamond League 2024
Diribe Welteji comfortably won the women’s 3000m event at Lausanne and set a new meeting record on the way. She was timed at 8:21.50 which was also her personal best. The Ethiopian had a two second lead over Janeth Chepngetich who came in second. Tsigie Gebreselama made sure that Ethiopia ended the event with two medals.
The race saw four athletes achieve their season best timings and personal bests. Welteji had agonizingly come close to winning a medal in the women’s 1500m at Paris Olympics 2024. She had finished fourth behind Great Britain’s Georgia Bell.
Gebreselama along with Ejgayehu Taye and Medina Eisa lead the Diamond League Finals standings with 14 points each. Welteji is in seventh place with seven points and will need more top three finishes to qualify for the finals. The top six athletes will get to compete in the finals.
