The 89.49m throw was also Neeraj Chopra’s second-best throw in his career.

India’s Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra finished second in the Lausanne Diamond League 2024 with a best effort of 89.49m in his sixth attempt. Neeraj, who won the previous two Lausanne meets, failed to defend his title this time. However, he ensured that his streak of finishing top two since August 2021 remains intact. Chopra now has 18 top two finishes in a row.

Fresh from his silver medal win at Paris Olympics 2024, Chopra started slowly and registered 82.10m in his first attempt. He improved his distance a bit in the second attempt with a throw of 83.21m. On his third and fourth attempts, the 26-year-old couldn’t better his effort as he recorded 83.13m and 82.34m respectively.

However, he came clutch in his fifth attempt with a much-improved effort of 85.58m to enter the top three and assured himself another throw. As it turned out, Neeraj had saved his best for the last, throwing a massive distance of 89.49m to eventually end as the runner-up. Not only was this his season best attempt but also the all-time career second best throw for the reigning World Champion.

Two-time World Champion and Paris Olympics bronze medallist Anderson Peters of Grenada won the Athletissima meet (Lausanne Diamond League) with a new meet record of 90.61m that came in his last attempt. Julian Weber of Germany finished third with a best effort of 87.08m.

Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic finished seventh with a best throw of 82.03m while Rio Olympic silver medalist Julius Yego of Kenya finished sixth with 83.00m.

Neeraj has so far won a total of four Diamond League meets (Lausanne x2, Doha and Zurich) and one Diamond League finals so far. With a runner-up finish in Lausanne, he added seven more points to this tally to take his total to 14 points and will now be in the third position in the race for the Diamond League finals.

Top six at the end of the qualification series will qualify for the Diamond League finals which will take place in Brussels on September 13-14. This year so far, Neeraj has participated in two diamond league meets and finished second in both (Doha and Lausanne).
