The stakes are too high for Chopra this time. Not only will he aim to defend his crown, but he will also look to open India’s medal tally in Tokyo, as the 19-member contingent is yet to make the podium.
Neeraj who has two World Championships medals (silver in 2022 and gold in 2023) looked in complete control in qualification, sealing his spot in the final with a massive 84.85m throw on his very first attempt, comfortably crossing the automatic qualification mark of 84.50m.
Sachin Yadav, meanwhile, finished 10th overall with a best of 83.67m, joining the top 12 athletes advancing to the finals. Chopra ended sixth overall in qualification.
The other two Indian was Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh but they finished 14th and 15th in Group B.
On the other hand, the two-time world champion Anderson Peters, announced his return from injury in style, recording a powerful 89.53m throw on his second attempt to top the charts.

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem had a shaky start with efforts of 76.99m and 74.17m, but the reigning Olympic champion redeemed himself in his final attempt with an 85.28m throw, finishing fifth overall.
It will be the first-ever meeting between Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem since their Paris Olympics 2024 showdown, where Nadeem stunned the world with a 92.97m effort to win gold, while Neeraj took silver with 89.45m.
