Murali Sreeshankar breaches 8m mark on comeback at Indian Open Athletics Meet 2025

This was Murali Sreeshankar’s first event in nearly two years.
Murali Sreeshankar marked his return to action with a gold medal win at the Indian Open Athletics Meet 2025 on Saturday (July 12) in Pune. The 26-year-old, who had been sidelined for the last 18 months due to a career-threatening knee injury, registered a best jump of 8.05m at the Savitribai Phule University Sports Complex in Pune to win the event.
The 26-year-old had also missed the Paris Olympics despite qualifying for it due to his knee injury. He will now have his eyes set on the upcoming World Athletics Championships, scheduled for September 13 to 21in Tokyo, Japan. The qualification mark for the men’s long jump event is set at 8.27m, quite short of Sreeshankar’s personal best in the event (8.41m).
Sreeshankar began his campaign at the Indian Open Athletics Meet with a 7.84m jump in his first attempt and followed it up with 7.99m and 7.84m in his next two jumps. He registered the 8.05m winning jump in his fourth attempt, before a foul jump and 7.84m in his final two jumps.
Odisha’s Sarun Payasingh finished second with a 7.68m jump, while Kerala’s Amal T.P. bagged third place with a best jump of 7.45m.

A total of 14 athletes competed in the men’s long jump event at the Indian Open Athletics Meet 2025. Five others were expected to be a part of the event but did not start due to unknown reasons.
