Murali Sreeshankar wins long jump event at Qosanov Memorial

This was Murali Sreeshankar’s second international event and third overall after his return from a long-term injury.
Murali Sreeshankar won the men’s long jump final in the 19th edition of the Qosanov Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meet, in Almaty on Saturday, August 2.
The Indian long jumper registered a best jump of 7.94m to finish at the top. His winning jump came on his very first attempt. In his remaining attempts, he registered jumps of 7.73m, 7.58m, 7.57m, 7.80m, and 7.79m.
Philippines’ Janry Ubas and Nazim Babayev from Azerbaijan finished second and third with jumps of 7.53m and 7.48m, respectively.
Vadim Karnaukhov was the only athlete from the host nation competing in the men’s long jump final. He registered a 7.15m jump to secure fifth place in the standings.
Seven athletes took the field on Saturday in the men’s long jump final at the Qosanov Memorial 2025. The field included two athletes from Uzbekistan and one each from the Philippines, India, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. All participants breached the 7m mark in the competition.
Sreeshankar made his comeback from a long-term injury at the Indian Open Athletics Meet 2025 in July, recording a jump of 8.05m. The event marked his return after being sidelined for 18 months due to a career-threatening knee injury.
The 26-year-old recently won the long jump event at the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto 2025 in Maia, Portugal, with a 7.75m jump. This was his first international competition since returning from injury.
Sreeshankar will compete across multiple events in Europe and Asia over the next two weeks as the Indian athlete looks to secure a spot in the World Athletics Championships, scheduled to be held in Tokyo from September 13 to 21.
