Sreeshankar was the only athlete to clear the 8m mark at the Indian Athletics Series 1.

Murali Sreeshankar won the gold medal in the men’s long jump final with an 8.15m jump in the Indian Athletics Series 1 on Saturday, April 4 at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. The Indian athlete cleared the 8m mark in his season opener.

He also became the third Asian long jumper the breach the 8m mark in the ongoing season.

Representing NCOE Trivandrum in the event, Sreeshankar began his campaign with an 8.03m jump and followed it up with a 7.99m jump in his second attempt.

The 27-year-old athlete registered a jump of 8.13m, before the gold medal winning jump of 8.15m. The Kerala-born athlete registered 8.12m and 8.10m in his last two attempts.

Following his return from a career-threatening knee injury, Sreeshankar has cleared the 8m mark thrice in six events.

He registered a best jump of 8.05m upon return from his injury during the Indian Open Athletics Meet in July 2025 and bettered his performance with an 8.06m jump at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in August last year. The Indian long jumper clinched gold medals in both events.

Speaking of the men’s long jump final, Bihar’s Sunny Kumar bagged the silver medal with a best jump of 7.90m. Purushotham from Karnataka took home the bronze medal, having recorded a 7.87m jump on Saturday.
