Neeraj Chopra’s next appearance will likely be at the Diamond League Finals in Zurich on August 28.

India’s javelin ace Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn from last Diamond League meeting of the season in Brussels, scheduled for Friday, August 22.

The two-time Olympic medallist has already qualified for the Diamond League Finals in Zurich, which will be held on August 27–28.

Chopra is expected to be in action in Switzerland that will also serve as a warm-up for his campaign at the World Athletics Championships 2025 to be held in Tokyo this September, where he will defend his world title.

Also, the stage in Tokyo carries special feelings for the Indian star, as it was on Japanese soil that he won his first Olympic gold in 2021—India’s first-ever athletics gold at the Games.

Neeraj has participated in only two of the four Diamond League meetings that included javelin this season, but his performances have been outstanding enough to book a place in the DL final.

In Doha, he finally broke the 90m barrier with a massive throw of 90.23m. Despite the milestone, he settled for second-place finish as Germany’s Julian Weber claimed the title with a 91.06m throw.

The 27-year-old followed it up at the Paris Diamond League in June, where he did not touch the 90m mark but still won gold with a best throw of 88.16m.

Only the top six athletes in the Diamond League men’s javelin standings qualify for the finals. With his two podium finishes, Chopra sits third on the table with 15 points, tied with Weber who is on second. Trinidad & Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott currently leads the standings.

The winner of the Zurich final will receive USD 30,000 in prize money and a wild card entry into the World Athletics Championships. For the Paris Olympics silver medallist Chopra, however, the bigger prize lies ahead—defending his crown on the worlds stage in Tokyo.
