Neeraj Chopra has opted out of Golden Spike 2024 athletics meet as a precautionary measure.
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympics and world champion in men’s javelin has withdrawn from the Ostrava Golden Spike 2024 athletics meet, citing concerns over an adductor muscle issue. Initially reported as an injury by event organizers, Chopra clarified on Instagram that while he isn’t presently injured, he opted out as a precautionary measure due to discomfort in his adductor, which he had experienced previously.
In a statement issued by the event organizers, it was stated that Chopra had sustained an adductor muscle injury during training two weeks prior, prompting his withdrawal from the competition scheduled for May 28 in the Czech Republic.
However, Chopra’s subsequent clarification emphasized that he withdrew to avoid aggravating the issue and risking injury, particularly in an Olympic year.
Chopra wrote on his Instagram story, “Hello everyone! Following a recent throwing session, I decided not to compete in Ostrava as I felt something in my adductor,” Neeraj clarified, “I have had problems with it in the past and pushing it at this stage can lead to injury.
“Just to clarify I am not injured but I don’t want to take any risk during the Olympic year so had to take this decision.
“Once I feel it’s fully recovered, I will get back to competitions. Thank you for your support.”
Neeraj who finished second in men’s javelin competition at the Doha Diamond League and clinched Gold at the Federation Cup 2024, will be replaced by Julian Weber for the Ostrava Golden Spike tournament.
Jakub Valdejch is the defending champion. Czechia won the tournament with a throw of 81.93m.
