The Olympic and world champion is unlikely to participate in any domestic event this year.
After clinching the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Neeraj Chopra went on to secure silver at the 2022 World Championships and then gold at the subsequent edition. Before winning the 2022 Diamond League, he achieved his best throw of 89.94m. He also successfully defended his Asian Games title last year.
As the Paris Olympics 2024 countdown ticks away, Chopra has expressed his confidence in delivering yet another remarkable performance on the grand stage. With the world set to gather in the French capital later this year, the current Olympic, World and Asian champion sees the Paris Olympics as the ultimate prize in 2024.
Neeraj completed a training period of 85 days at the Northwest University in Potchefstroom from December 5, 2023, to February 29, 2024. He has started his training journey at the Gloria Sports Arena in Antalya, Turkey. Joining him are his coach, Dr. Klaus Bartonietz, a biomechanics expert and his physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha. He has not yet participated in any competitions this season and is anticipated to start his season during the Doha leg of the 2024 Diamond League in May.
The Diamond League will be a major focus of the season, starting in China’s Xiamen on April 20. It has been revealed that Neeraj Chopra will be opting to participate in fewer tournaments, ideally, three or four, leading up to the Paris Olympics to prioritize keeping himself injury-free.
His schedule for 2024 is likely to be packed with significant events beyond the highly anticipated Paris Olympics. Chopra is likely to kick-off his season with the Doha Diamond League in Qatar on May 10. Subsequently, he will gear up for the Paris Diamond League in France on July 7, serving as a crucial preparatory event leading up to the pinnacle of athletic competition – the Paris Olympics.
Following the Olympics, Neeraj Chopra could continue his competitive appearances at the Lausanne Diamond League in Switzerland on August 22 followed by the Zurich Diamond League on September 5. As the season reaches its climax, Neeraj will look forward to culminating his journey at the Brussels Diamond League Finals in Belgium, which are slated for September 13-14.
With a rigorous lineup of events, Chopra is poised to shine on the global stage throughout 2024. He is not expected to make any domestic appearances this season.
