Noah Lyles earlier won gold in the men’s 100m sprint at Paris Olympics.

Olympic 100m men’s gold medallist Noah Lyles on Wednesday proved that having internet fame doesn’t necessarily translate to fast-twitch muscle fiber as he outpaced YouTube sensation IShowSpeed in a $100,000 dash orchestrated by MrBeast.

A highly anticipated 50-meter showdown which featured Lyles, fresh from his COVID-defying gold medal performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 against 19-year-old Darren “IShowSpeed” Watkins Jr., whose 33 million YouTube subscribers apparently didn’t help his acceleration.

“In raw speed, I’m faster than you,” declared IShowSpeed, moments before discovering that “raw speed” and “Olympic-caliber sprinting” might not be quite the same thing. Lyles, whose recent 9.784-second Olympic gold run nearly challenged Usain Bolt’s record, responded with the calm confidence of someone who runs sub-10 seconds for breakfast: “I didn’t even hit top speed.”

MrBeast, acting as referee in striped uniform, saw Olympic champion explain why casual athleticism isn’t the same as elite training for years. However, the story didn’t end at the finish line.

In the sporting gesture that might launch YouTube’s next training montage, Lyles offered to coach his enthusiastic challenger. “You should practice with me and then at the end of the week, we’ll race again,” he suggested, adding that they could tackle “the real man’s race, the 100m.”

The event has even kindled the interest of an NFL star like Tyreek Hill, who has been lobbying for his own race against Lyles since August 2023. The Miami Dolphins speedster might have to take lessons from Speed’s experience before giving out any more challenges.

Regarding IShowSpeed, who openly admitted, “I’ve never run track a day in my life,” the YouTuber’s resolve didn’t waver after losing. Even though he got tired around the 30-meter point – something Lyles mentioned – Speed’s quick demand for another race hints that this unexpected blend of sports and social media might have a follow-up coming soon.
