Two Indian athletes will take part in the Paris Diamond League 2024.

The Paris Diamond League 2024 will begin from July 7. With the 2024 Paris Olympics set to start at the end of this month, the Diamond League will serve as the perfect warm up event for athletes across the world.

There will only be two representatives from India, Avinash Sable in the 3000m Steeplechase and Kishore Kumar Jena in Javelin throw.

Although both men have already qualified for Paris Olympics, they are yet to perform their best this season. While Sable finished on top at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships last month, Jena finished a surprising third.

Sable will be having a tough time at the 3000m Steeplechase which comprises 16 other athletes at the Paris Diamond League 2024. Two Kenyan athletes are expected to lead the field, Abraham Kibiwot and Amos Serem.

While Kibiwot has the third fastest timing this season, Serem is the seventh fastest. Serem will also face competition from Mohamed Amin Jhinaoui who is in sixth position this year among the fastest runners in the  3000m Steeplechase.

Sable’s season best timing of 8:21.85 secs came at Oregon, USA during the Portland track festival last month. His personal best of 8:11.20 secs can guarantee him a finish in the top ranks. The 29-year-old will be participating in the Diamond League for the first time this year.

The field looks even more complicated for Jena in the javelin throw at the Paris Diamond League 2024. With 10 athletes participating, the 28-year-old has to peak at the right time to stand a chance to win the event. Jena is yet to touch the 81m mark this season.

His season best throw of 80.84m came at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships last month. Jena’s overall personal best of 87.54m came during the 2023 Asian Games at Hangzhou. He will be participating in the Diamond League for the second time this year.

Jena had finished ninth in Doha with a throw of 76.31m. He will have to come close to 87m to register a podium finish at Paris Diamond League 2024.

The Odisha-based thrower will be up against Jakub Vadlejch, Julian Weber and Anderson Peters. Vadlejch will be leading the field as his throw of 88.65m is the second best this season. The Paris Diamond League 2024 will also see Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem entering his first competition this season.

For India, this will be a test for the Paris Olympics. Sable and Jena will have a chance to prove their caliber against their rivals.
