Parul Chaudhary will next be in action in women’s 3000m steeplechase event at Paris Olympics 2024.

India made a disastrous start to their athletics campaign at Paris Olympics 2024 with both Parul Chaudhary and Ankita Dhyani failing to reach the women’s 5000m final. Both athletes finished towards the bottom of their respective heats

Asian Games champion, Parul Chaudhary, who is also the national record holder, competed in heat 2 of the women’s 5000m whereas Ankita Dhyani competed in heat 1. To qualify for the final, the Indian runners had to place in the top eight of their respective heats.

Ankita ended up 20th in Heat 1 with a timing of 16:19.38, experiencing a lag due to her slow start resulting in a 20th-place finish. Faith Kipyegon took first place in the heat with a time of 14:57.56.

On the other hand, with a season-best time of 15:10.68, Parul Chaudhary finished 14th in Heat 2 of the women’s 5000m Round 1. She was 0.3 seconds away from breaking her own national record.

Since only the top eight from each heat qualified for the finals, the Indian athletes did not advance. This came as disappointing news for Indian viewers, but it was still a valuable platform for them to showcase their skills.

Parul will next be in action in women’s 3000m steeplechase, while this was the end of the campaign for Ankita Dhyani.

Meanwhile, two-time Asian Games champion and Asian record holder, Tajinderpal Singh Toor also failed to qualify for the men’s shot-put final after finishing with just one valid attempt and a best attempt of 18.05m. The qualification time was set at 21.35 and while Tajinderpal fell way short of it, he was also outside the 12 best performers and finished an overall 29th from 31 competitors in the event.

Athletes meeting the qualifying time or the 12 best performers from the qualification round advanced to final, which will take place on Saturday (August 3).
