Asian Games 2026: Parul Chaudhary clinches bronze with national record timing in women’s 3000m steeplechase

Parul Chaudhary clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 3000m steeplechase event on Sunday, September 27, with a new personal best timing of 9:08.67 to take India’s medal tally to 36 at the ongoing Asian Games 2026.
Parul was in the fray till the last lap along with Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi but could not give the Bahrain athlete a run for her money for the gold medal.

Yavi won gold in a Games record time of 9:04.36, while Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto Tanui took silver with 9:06.82.
Parul’s teammate Ankita was fourth with a personal best time of 9:19.24.
The bronze was Parul’s third Asian Games medal. She won gold in the 5000m and silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Parul also bettered her previous best of 9:12.46 which she had achieved at Asian Championships in Gumi last year by over three seconds. She has now become the first Indian woman to cross the 9:10 barrier in the 3000m steeplechase.
Ankita was fourth in a personal best of 9:19.24, another good performance for India in the event.
Parul made her Asiad debut at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where she achieved a remarkable double by winning gold in the 5000m and silver in the 3000m steeplechase.
She has also established herself as one of India’s leading distance runners, with national records in the 3000m and 5000m.

A day after competing in the women’s 1500m final, she took bronze in Nagoya – proof of her versatility across distance events.
The medal also adds another chapter to the history of Indian women’s steeplechasing. With silver in Hangzhou and bronze in Aichi-Nagoya, Parul now has two Asian Games individual medals in the 3000m steeplechase, equaling the haul of former Indian steeplechaser Sudha Singh.
Sudha won gold in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and then won silver at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.
A junior to well-established steeplechasers like Sudha Singh and Lalita Babar, Parul has now made a name for herself as one of India’s leading runners in the event, inspiring the next generation of Indian athletes in the process.
