The javelin throw is one of the most challenging events in track and field. It requires not only sheer power but also refined technique. Notably, there have been no world records in the men’s event since 1996. For nearly three decades, athletes have struggled to consistently throw over 90m in the event.
To date, only 27 athletes have managed to breach the 90m mark in men’s javelin throw. Max Dehning is the youngest athlete to do so, achieving a throw of 90.20m in February 2024 at just 19 years old.
The first athlete to cross the 90m mark with the redesigned javelin was Kimmo Kinnunen of Finland. He recorded 90.82m in 1991 at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, a world record at the time.
In 2017, Chao-Tsun Cheng became the first Asian athlete to breach the 90m mark, throwing 91.36m at Taipei Municipal Stadium.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan holds the Olympic record in the event. He threw 92.97m during the finals of Paris Olympics 2024.
Jan Zelezny holds the world record of 98.48m which he threw in 1996. He is also the only athlete to win three consecutive Olympic golds in men’s javelin throw. He won gold in 1992, 1996 and 2000.
