Three quarter-milers recorded a sub-46s timing at the event at the Indian Open.

Indian runner Rajesh Ramesh has clocked his career-best timing as well as the third fastest time in Indian history in the men’s 400m event. Ramesh topped the event at the Indian Open Jumps with a time of 45.26 seconds on Saturday, March 21.

Ramesh’s finish was only behind the national record holder, Vishal TK, who clocked 45.12 seconds, and Muhammed Anas’ 45.21 seconds. With the finish, the quarter-miler has had a strong start to the season and is now expected to run a better time in the upcoming months.

Last season, Ramesh clocked 45.77s at the Indian Grand Prix 2 and then 45.97s at the Indian Open Athletics meet. Both finishes helped him secure a podium finish, but the distance towards the pinnacle looked a little steep.

The 26-year-old has been receiving constant competition from Vishal TK, who clocked 45.57s at the Asian Athletics Championships. However, in his defence, Ramesh has been consistent with sub-46 performances.

Before the 26-year-old recorded his career-best finish at the Indian Open, his best timing of 45.54s came at the Poland Meet in 2024. Rajesh Ramesh was also a crucial part of the Indian athletics contingent, who rewrote the record at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team, consisting of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, and Rajesh Ramesh, stunned the world by creating a new Asian record. They clocked a timing of 2 minutes and 59.05 seconds to qualify for their maiden final round of the World Championships in Budapest.

In the final, they finished fifth after clocking 2:59.92 seconds. Later in the year, the Indian team also won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

Returning to the 2026 Indian Open, after Rajesh Ramesh, Manu T S, who finished second with a time of 45.96, also registered a lifetime best. Amoj Jacob also recorded a sub-46 performance, which is a good sign for Indian athletics.
