Asian Games 2026: Sarvesh Kushare wins silver in men’s high jump

Kushare clinched his maiden Asian Games medal

India’s Sarvesh Kushare won the silver medal in men’s high jump event at the Asian Games 2026 on Sunday, September 27. Kushare finished second by clearing 2.25m at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Japan.

This marked the first Asiad medal for the 31-year-old Maharashtra native, who had narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the Hangzhou 2022 Games. Kushare’s win also ended India’s 56-year wait for a medal in the event.

Chinese Taipei’s Fu Chao-hsuan also cleared 2.25m, but he was awarded the gold medal on countback. South Korea’s Woo Sang-hyeok won the bronze medal with a best clearance of 2.22m.

The other Indian athlete competing in the event, Aadarsh Ram, finished 13th after pulling out with injury.

Sarvesh Kushare ends India’s wait for high jump medal

With his silver-winning performance at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, Kushare has become just the third Indian athlete to win an Asian Games medal in the high jump.

The other two athletes to achieve this feat are Ajit Singh, who clinched gold in 1954, and Bhim Singh, who won gold in 1966 and bronze in 1970.

It is also a moment of redemption for Kushare. He missed out on a medal at the Hangzhou 2022 Games, finishing fourth despite clearing 2.26m.

This capped a wonderful season for Kushare, who became the national record holder after clearing a personal best of 2.31m in June. He also competed in the Commonwealth Games 2026, winning a silver medal by clearing 2.25m.
