K. M. Deeksha breaks 1500-meter National Record at competition in Los Angeles

K. M. Deeksha’s previous personal best came at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in 2023.
K. M. Deeksha recently broke the Indian national record and also bagged the third position in the 1500m event during the Sound Running Track Festival in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 12.
The 25-year-old’s previous personal best was 4:06.07, which she achieved in the final of the National Inter-State Athletics Championships at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar in 2023.
Deeksha, who hails from Madhya Pradesh, completed the 1500-meter race in 4:04.78 minutes, breaking the previous record of 4:05.39 minutes set by Harmilan Bains in 2021 at the National Open Athletics Championships. In 2021, Asian Games silver medalist Harmilan Bains bettered Sunita Rani’s 4:06.03 record, created in 2002, to put her name on the list.
However, Home Hope USA’s Krissy Gear won the women’s 1500m race, with her recorded time being 4:03.65. Gear also missed out on direct qualification to the 2024 Paris Games, as 4:02.50 is the mark for the upcoming Summer Olympics.

Apart from K.M. Deeksha, nine more Indian athletes competed at Track Fest 2024. Asian Games gold medalist Avinash Sable secured second place in the men’s 5000m with 13:20.37 as his clocked time. Meanwhile, Gulveer Singh finished fifth in the same race in 13:31.65.
Parul Chaudhary failed to better her national record by a margin of 0.34 seconds in the women’s 5000m event. Chaudhary finished fifth in the event, while Ankita was in 10th place. Seema (32:45.61) and Sanjivani Jadhav (32:50.12) finished 12th and 13th in the women’s 10000m race respectively. Moreover, Priti Lamba clocked 9:53:40 for 11th place in the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
