The twentieth edition of the biennial meet will return to the Japanese capital after 31 years.
Tokyo is again set to host a major sporting spectacle as the World Athletics Championship returns to the city in 2025.
As confirmed on Thursday by the sport's global governing body, World Athletics, Tokyo will host the 2025 World Athletics Championship after winning out over Kenya, Poland and Singapore.
After a pandemic-delayed Olympics last year where fans were not allowed to attend, they will finally get to experience Tokyo's Olympic Stadium's electric atmosphere in 2025. It would be the first fan-attended event hosted at the stadium.
“Within an extremely strong field of candidates to host the World Athletics Championships 2025, Tokyo offered a compelling bid,” World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said.
“I hope this will be a shining light for Japan as they celebrate 100 years of the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) in 2025, by bringing world-class athletics back to the people in Tokyo.”
Having hosted the World Championship in 1991, Tokyo streets are no stranger to the tournament. The most notable performance at that tournament was the world record-breaking leap of 8.95 meters made by legendary American long jumper Mike Powell.
“History has shown that we have the ability and energy to host the world’s top athletes and to inspire international audiences,” JAAF President Mitsugi Ogata said.
“We promise that the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo will be full of fans to become an unforgettable experience for the athletes and everyone involved,” Ogata added.
