The World Athletics Championships 2025 will be the 20th edition of the event.

The World Athletics Championships 2025 will see the clash of top stars at Tokyo. The event is scheduled to be held from September 13 to 21. One of the top watched events will be the 100m as it could be a re-match of the Paris Olympics. The men’s and women’s field is packed up with potential champions as new records could be set at Tokyo.

The men’s 100m event has largely been dominated by the USA at World Athletics Championships. The nation has produced at least one medallist in the event in every edition since 2005. The past four editions have seen American athletes finish on top of the podium. In the 2022 edition, USA swept the podium and it will try to bring back the glory days in 2025 at Tokyo.

Defending world and the current Olympic champion in the men’s 100m, Noah Lyles will hope to successfully defend his title. The American had tough competition at the Paris Olympics but narrowly edged his rivals. One of his closest competitors, Kishane Thompson is eager to avenge his defeat at Paris. 2022 champion, Fred Kerley is also one of the favourites at Tokyo.

In the women’s 100m event, there has been an intense rivalry between USA and Jamaica. Defending champion, Sha’Carri Richardson could lose her crown to Olympic champion, Julien Afred. Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson won silver medals in the past two editions of the event and seeks a change in 2025.

Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith will be eager to upgrade her silver from Doha 2019. She had set the national record in the women’s 100m while finishing second in Doha. Two-time silver medallist at the event, Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith could appear in her final world championships. The sprinter from Ivory Coast is 35 years old but clocked her season best of 10.80 at Paris in August.
