India’s performance in the past editions
Sudirman Cup was established in 1989 and is held once every two years (last held in 2021). India’s best performance came in 2011 and 2017 reaching the quarter-finals. The Indian team hasn’t progressed beyond the quarter-finals stage and will have its task cut out in the upcoming edition.
In the previous edition, India entered the competition without star players – PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal and eventually finished 12th out of the 16 teams. They lost to Thailand and China in the group stages but had an easy win against Finland.
Incidentally, India failed to qualify for the 2019 edition of the Sudirman Cup. Top Indian players have had a poor start to the 2023 season with Priyanshu Rajawat being one of the bright spots (winning the title at the Orleans Masters).
