Group Stage summary
Hosts Indonesia, China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, India, Thailand and Korea advanced to the knockout stages of the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2023 after a gruelling group stages. While Indonesia advanced as the top-placed team from Group A, China made it through by virtue of finishing second. Similarly, Japan topped Group B and Chinese Taipei came second. India finished second in Group C, while Malaysia came out on top. Korea qualified as Group D leaders.
The winner of the Indonesia vs India clash will face the winner between Malaysia and Thailand in the first semi-finals, while the winners of Chinese Taipei vs Korea will clash against the winners between China vs Japan meeting in the second semi-finals. The semis are scheduled for later today (July 10) at 2:30 PM IST (4:00 PM local time).
India advanced to the quarter-finals with a commanding 5-0 win over Hong Kong but were beaten by the same margin by Malaysia in their final group stage meeting. They had started the tournament with a handsome 5-0 victory against Bangladesh on the opening day of the competition in Yogyakarta.
Tara Shah and Ayush Shetty have been India's best performers in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2023 so far. Both returned with wins in the women's and men's singles clashes respectively against Bangladesh and Hong Kong. They were rested in the clash against Malaysia, which India lost, as India had already confirmed their place in the knockouts. The finals are scheduled to take place on July 11 (Sunday).
