Jonatan Christie to lead the men’s singles contingent in Ginting’s absence

Indonesia’s men’s singles badminton player, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting is set to miss the upcoming BWF World Championships 2023 scheduled to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark from August 21 to 27.

Ginting’s mother, Lucia Sriati, unfortunately passed away on Wednesday (August 9th) and the news was confirmed through PBSI’s official social media (Indonesian Badminton Association) handle. Anthony in his statement to PBSI said his mother expired at 12.30 WIB (Indonesia’s time zone). Meanwhile the funeral was held on Saturday (August 12th) at Graha Sentosa Memorial Park, West Karawang.

“Anthony Sinisuka Ginting has been really close with his mother and it’s turning out to be very difficult for him to cope with such a situation. He is still in a state of mourning over the passing of his beloved mother, and didn’t fly to Copenhagen, Denmark for the BWF World Championships 2023,” said Irwansyah, the men’s singles head coach.

Ginting’s mother was present in the stadium to watch her son play in the final of Indonesia Open in a wheelchair in June a few months back. Unfortunately, the world number two, Anthony Ginting had to settle for the second spot at the BWF Super 1000 event. The athlete hailing from West Java lost to the world number one from Denmark, Viktor Axelsen.

This will be a huge dent to Indonesia’s campaign as Ginting is one of the most experienced players. His form in the past two tournaments – Japan Open and Australian Open have not been upto the mark but he had the capability to rise to the occasion whenever required.

In his absence, Indonesia’s second seed Jonathan Christie and world number twenty Chico Dwi Wardoyo will carry the baton in the men’s Singles event at the BWF World Championships 2023.
