Prakash Padukone was the first Indian to clinch the title.
The Denmark Open, also known as the Danish Open, is an annual badminton tournament organized by Badminton Denmark. From 2011 to 2017, the Denmark Open was part of the prestigious BWF Super Series Premier. Starting in 2018, it was reclassified by the BWF as one of the five BWF World Tour Super 750 events, signifying its global significance in the badminton world.
This iconic event had its inception in 1936 and proudly stands as the second-oldest badminton competition in the world. The tumultuous period of World War II led to a temporary hiatus, spanning from 1956 to 1964. The Denmark Open consistently aspires to attract the world’s finest players, and it has become a tradition to hold the competition in late October each year.
For spectators, the Denmark Open provides an exceptional experience, with seating arrangements designed to bring them closer to the electrifying on-court action. Over the years, the Denmark Open has found its home in the beautiful city of Odense, Denmark, since 2008.
In the inaugural edition of the Denmark Open, Danish players achieved a remarkable feat, clinching titles in all categories. Morten Frost, a Danish badminton legend, holds the record for the most Men’s singles titles, having won the prestigious championship eight times. Tonny Olsen, another Danish icon, matched her compatriot’s achievement by securing the women’s singles title an astounding eight times.
India made history at the Denmark Open when the legendary Prakash Padukone claimed the Men’s singles title in 1980. It was a long 37-year wait until India celebrated its second Men’s singles title, thanks to the talented Srikanth Kidambi. In 2012, Saina Nehwal etched her name in the tournament’s history by becoming the women’s singles champion, following her Olympic medal-winning triumph.
The Denmark Open has a total prize purse of US$850,000, we are poised for yet another thrilling showdown on the badminton court. With a rich legacy of champions, the Denmark Open remains a cornerstone of excellence in the world of badminton, attracting top talents from around the globe to compete for glory.
